“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” continued to dominate the North American box office, earning an additional $70 million in ticket sales during its third weekend, according to industry estimates.

The superhero film, starring Tom Holland and his real-life wife Zendaya, has grossed more than $2 billion worldwide since its July 31 release, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations said. It is now Sony Pictures’ highest-grossing film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The latest Marvel blockbuster also recorded the biggest domestic debut weekend of all time, earning $360 million and surpassing Disney’s 2019 “Avengers: Endgame” on a non-inflation-adjusted basis.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film follows Peter Parker as he struggles with changes to his powers and lives in isolation after erasing his identity.

Peter works to reconnect with his former girlfriend MJ (Zendaya) and best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) while confronting a new force threatening New York City.

A distant second was Christopher Nolan’s epic “The Odyssey”, which collected $23.2 million domestically for Universal during its fifth weekend in cinemas.

Warner Bros’ sci-fi thriller “The End of Oak Street” took third place, earning $21 million on its opening weekend. It stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor as a couple fighting to survive after their neighbourhood is transported to prehistoric times.

In fourth place, “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” earned an estimated $20.5 million for Paramount on its debut weekend.

“Katseye: Wild Hearts”, chronicling the pop girl group of the same name, debuted in fifth place with $3.6 million for Trafalgar Releasing.

These five films capped a busy weekend across North American cinemas.

Overall, 2026 continues to be a strong year for Hollywood.

“The box office generally slows during the second half of August as kids start returning to school, but right now business remains extremely strong”, industry analyst David A Gross said. — AFP
